Rundownman Sets the Tone at the US Open — Can Anyone Answer?

There's something about a Major that strips away the pretence. No hiding behind a soft draw or a generous layout. The US Open asks questions, and Round 1 had its share of honest answers — some you'd be proud of, most you wouldn't.

Rundownman leads the way after shooting -7, and fair play, that's a serious number on a US Open setup. Seven under par on this kind of course isn't a fluke — that's someone who came prepared, kept the ball in play, and made putts when it mattered. He's top of the Premier Division standings on 555 points for a reason, and he looked every bit of it today. Don't expect me to get carried away though. It's one round. He's been here before.

iluvJEEZUS is one back at -6, and skyline_time513 is right in the mix at -5. imtrippin at -4 and vandyman96 at -2 round out a top five that's all Premier Division, which tells you something about experience when the course bites. The top of this leaderboard is tight, and one bad hole tomorrow changes everything.

Down in the chasing group, War Eagle 1910, RAYvenfanatic, and Wheelman all finished at even par — and honestly, on a day like today, E is respectable. Not inspiring, but respectable. They're still in the conversation, just about.

Now. C.E.WiZ came in at +11. That's poor stuff now, no two ways about it. A Division 3 player, granted, but +11 at a Major isn't a learning experience — it's a tough afternoon. GolfGriffin at +10 wasn't far behind in the wrong direction. These two are going to need to take a long, hard look at their scorecards tonight.

HBwilliams out of Division 2 posted +5, which puts him ninth overall — and while that's not a round to frame on the wall, it keeps him relevant. He'll need better in Round 2 if he wants to matter.

From a standings perspective, nothing shifts after one round — all arrows are steady — but that Premier Division top five is worth watching. Austin and daddyjules10 didn't feature today, which leaves a gap Rundownman and iluvJEEZUS will be looking to extend.

Round 2 awaits, and that leaderboard at the top is close enough that anything could happen. The course won't get easier, and some of those scores in the middle of the field have nowhere to hide.
