404Error Storms Back While the Leaders Crumble at TPC

Well now, that was some turnaround at The Players Championship. After two rounds, iluvJEEZUS had this thing sewn up at -20, eight clear of the field and looking untouchable. Fast forward to Sunday evening and he's watching 404Error hoist the trophy after a masterclass in closing out majors.

404Error put together the kind of weekend that separates the pretenders from the contenders. That final round -9 was pure class, but it was the third round -12 that really caught my eye — when the pressure was on and he needed to make a move, he delivered. Compare that to iluvJEEZUS, who went from -11, -9 in the first two rounds to a pedestrian -4, -4 finish. When you're eight shots clear after 36 holes and still lose by eight, that's not bad luck — that's bottling it.

Credit where it's due to Padraig1501 though. Third place and a steady climb every day tells you everything about his character. Started with a shaky -3, found his rhythm, then closed with rounds of -10 and -5. That's how you play a major when you're not getting the early breaks.

The real story was in the middle rounds. 404Error was lurking at -15 after day two, five back, when most were writing him off. Meanwhile, imtrippin looked dangerous at -15 alongside him but completely fell apart — even par and +1 over the weekend is shocking stuff from someone of his caliber in Premier Division.

Jack-Mac21 deserves a mention for that final round -8, climbing back to fourth after a disappointing middle stretch. Shows the character that's kept him in Premier Division all season. Same can't be said for some others — D. Geoghegan finishing at -3 in a major is frankly embarrassing for someone at that level.

The cut played out as expected, though DataPoint775 made the most of his Shield appearance with an -11 to take that consolation prize. Small mercies and all that.

404Error now has a proper buffer at the top of the Premier Division standings. This was championship golf when it mattered most.
